Cavity drainage: managing water
Cavity drainage, or Type C protection, takes the opposite philosophy. Rather than resisting water, it accepts that some may pass and manages it. A dimpled membrane lines the walls and floor, creating a void that channels any ingress to a perimeter drain and sump, from which pumps discharge it safely away. Because it is maintainable and forgiving of minor structural movement, it is the go-to system for retrofit basements beneath Georgian and Victorian townhouses, usually paired with underpinning. Its reliance on pumps means power supply, battery back-up and easy access for servicing must be designed in from the very start.
